We warmly invite you to the seminar of the Department of Mechanics, Materials and Biomedical Engineering, to be held on Wednesday, 21 October 2026 at 11:15, room 117, building B-1 (25 Smoluchowskiego St.).
Our guest will be Prof. Ana Catarina Sousa of the Lisbon School of Engineering (ISEL), Polytechnic University of Lisbon, Portugal, visiting Wrocław University of Science and Technology under the Erasmus+ staff mobility programme.
Title: “Innovative Biopolymer-Based Materials with Antimicrobial Properties”
About the speaker
Prof. Ana Catarina Sousa is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Lisbon School of Engineering (ISEL), Polytechnic University of Lisbon. She teaches courses including General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Biomaterials, and serves as Erasmus+ coordinator for the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Biomedical Engineering. She holds a degree in Industrial Chemical Engineering from ISEL (2000), an MSc in Sanitary Engineering (2006) and a PhD in Chemistry (2015) from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. She is a researcher at the Centro de Química Estrutural (IST) and a member of the MINDlab team. The primary focus of her research is green and sustainable chemistry, including biocatalytic and microwave-assisted synthesis of compounds with therapeutic applications, and the use of biopolymers as support materials for controlled drug-dosage systems. Her project HyBioPol (2020, funded by IPL) addresses new environmentally friendly hybrid materials from biopolymer films for antimicrobial applications.
